The post does not issue slogans

Two city councillors asked Irad Pochtasy for an "Irad is not for sale" stamp. The post said no. A print shop said yes.

Irad Pochtasy has turned down a request from two Talas city councillors for a postage stamp reading Irad satylbayt, "Irad is not for sale", the slogan of last month's marches. "The post does not issue slogans," the Philatelic Bureau said in its reply, which the councillors made public yesterday.

The councillors had asked for a stamp "so that every letter that leaves Irad carries our answer". The bureau said its stamps commemorated "anniversaries, heritage and the natural world" and that its programme for the year was already fixed.

A print shop near the Central Bazaar has meanwhile produced an unofficial sheet of gummed labels with the slogan, a horse and the flag, at five som a sheet. The owner said the first thousand sheets sold out at Sunday's march. "The post does not issue slogans," he said. "I do."

Irad Pochtasy said the labels were not postage and that letters bearing them in place of stamps would be returned. Collectors in Chicago have already asked for them.
