Attelkom launches Kartalar, its own map of Irad, for subscribers

The telecom says foreign map services show Irad wrongly or not at all. Its map works only on Attelkom connections.

Attelkom has launched Kartalar ("maps"), an online map of Irad with street plans of Talas, Nurzhan and Iyık Janyl, the roads of the special economic zone and the main places of the tribal regions.

The company said foreign map services were "unreliable" in Irad, showing the old Soviet names, the borders of neighbouring states or nothing at all. Kartalar, which the company built with the State Archives' 1994 gazetteer and its own survey cars, opens only for Attelkom subscribers in the ISEZ.

Businesses can add their opening hours and telephone numbers free of charge. Reviews of restaurants and shops are planned for next year. The tribal side of the Qara-Chik line is shown in less detail, which Attelkom said was "for the safety of travellers".
